David Moyes sacked as Real Sociedad manager

David Moyes was finally sacked by Real Sociedad on Monday afternoon after just a year in the job.

The former Manchester United manager knew his fate on Sunday night but Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay wanted to deliver the news face to face.

When Moyes’ flight back from Manchester to Bilbao was cancelled their meeting was put back, but former Barcelona youth team coach Eusebio Sacristan had already been lined up to take over until 2017.

Moyes is due around €1.5million (£1m) in compensation after his mission to turn Real Sociedad back into a European force hit the buffers and he must now return to England knowing that he has already turned down a host of top opportunities to rejoin the Premier League.

Last season he was targeted by Sunderland, West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle but he decided to remain loyal to Aperribay.

Real Sociedad are understood to have lined up Eusebio two weeks ago but the club’s president wanted to give Moyes, who he fought hard to persuade to join the club last November, longer to improve results.

The team were beaten by relegation favourites Las Palmas on Friday night and Aperribay was put under pressure by fellow board members in a meeting on Saturday and finally caved in. The team had picked up just two wins all season.
